A Story of Confidence, Hope, and Sensuality
After catching a whiff of perfume while sorting through a drawer of expensive underwear, Virginia Marcolin realized there must be a way to combine the power of scent with the visual attraction of lingerie for a more sensual, sensory-driven experience that makes the wearer feel special and her partner highly aroused. At the same time, reeling from a challenging season in her personal life, she felt compelled to create a brand that leads women to feel confident, sexy and empowered. After connecting with Durascent (™), the project came to life and Effleure was born.
From Fashion Buyer to Entrepreneur
Effleure founder Virginia Marcolin got her start in fashion buying in New York City, first as an intern at Henri Bendel, then as an assistant buyer at Charivari. In 1995, after a move to London, she found herself as a lingerie, nightwear and swimwear buyer for Selfridges, the prestigious department store; here is where she fell in love with all things lingerie. Several years later, after moving back home to Montreal, she launched a lingerie website for large cup-sized women, which found great success.
Now, with the launch of Effleure, Virginia is focusing her efforts on building a lingerie brand that empowers women, and builds courage and confidence in and out of the bedroom. Her goal is to build a high-end, successful lingerie brand that inspires confidence and sexiness in legions of women across the globe while giving back to charities.
Partnering With Charities to Improve Our World
Effleure’s aim is to empower women through confidence and owning one’s sensuality. We also want to give back to our local and global communities and to those who need a bit of extra strength. Therefore we have the idea to partner with a different charity for each scent we offer: $1 of every sale goes to that scent’s partner charity. Charity Navigator and Charity Intelligence Canada, the industry’s gold standards for charity evaluation, has highly rated each of our chosen charities. The non-profit organizations we have selected are as follows:
French Vanilla + The Shoebox Project (shoeboxproject.com)
For this very feminine scent, we chose a charity aiming to give homeless and impoverished women confidence and put a smile on their face – a mission that falls in line with ours.
The Shoebox Project collects and distributes gift-filled shoeboxes to local women impacted by homelessness in communities across Canada and the US. Each Shoebox is filled with items valued up to $50 that aim to enhance self-esteem and reduce feelings of isolation for vulnerable women. Learn more at shoeboxproject.com.
Dark Chocolate + buildOn (buildon.org)
What kid doesn’t love chocolate? For this scent, we chose to focus on future generations – specifically, helping impoverished and illiterate children across the globe.
At home or abroad, buildOn's mission is to break the cycle of poverty, illiteracy and low expectations through service and education. We empower US urban youth to transform their neighborhoods and the world through intensive community service. Black Coconut + charity: water (charitywater.org)
The Earth’s water crisis is at the forefront of our minds at Effleure. We take clean water for granted in Canada and the US but many developing countries lack access to clean water resources.
Our clean, tropical Black Coconut scent inspired us to take action and #fightdirty. charity: water is a non-profit organization bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing countries throughout the world. Learn more at charitywater.org.
Lavender + Brain & Behavior Research Foundation (bbrfoundation.org)
We all know the soothing and mood-stabilizing benefits of lavender. As someone living with bipolar disorder, this foundation is dear to my heart and I personally feel compelled to help strengthen the often-misunderstood community of those afflicted by mental health illness.
